Guitarist and banjoist HERB PEDERSEN got his start playing bluegrass around Southern California. During the 1960s he performed with Carl Tipton, David Grisman, Vern and Ray, Flatt & Scruggs, the Dillards, and the Country Gazette. In the 1970s, Pedersen became a top session man, playing with Linda Ronstadt, Buck Owens, Johnny Rivers, Earl Scruggs, Emmylou Harris, and John Denver among others. He also appeared on Chris Hillman's solo album and released two solo albums himself.
In the 1980s, Pedersen appeared on Chris Hillman's solo albums and released one of his own before founding the Desert Rose Band with Hillman. After the Desert Rose Band broke up, Herb Pedersen joined a bluegrass band called The Laurel Canyon Ramblers. Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen have continued working together, releasing the albums Bakersfield Bound (Sugar Hill, 1996), Out of the Woodwork (Rounder, 1997), and Way Out West (Virgin/Backporch, 2002).
Our February 8th house concert with Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen was another standing room only house concert as we squeezed in well over 100 people in our living room for a packed and thoroughly enjoyable evening. With the backing of Bill Bryson on upright bass, Chris & Herb performed songs from throughout their amazing careers including The Byrds ("Turn, Turn, Turn", "Mr. Tambourine Man", and "Eight Miles High"), The Flying Burrito Bros. ("Wheels"), Manassas ("It Doesn't Matter"), Desert Rose Band ("Love Reunited"), Laurel Canyon Rambles ("To A Heart Always True") as well as other solo and duo material and miscellaneous folk classics. It was truly a memorable evening and we feel honored to have been able to host it!
